Raj Bhavan Kolkata is the residence-cum-secretariat of the Governor of West Bengal. Principal Secretary to the Governor is the head of the Department of the Governor’s Secretariat and the Household Secretariat. There is a Special Secretary who is the head of the office of the Governor’s Secretariat. The Governor’s Secretariat consists of 2(two) sections namely Special Section and General Section which is headed by a Special Officer and a Section Officer respectively. The Household Secretariat is headed by the Comptroller of Household. The day-to-day activities of the Household Secretariat is looked after by an Officer on Special Duty-cum-Deputy Secretary. The Governor’s Secretariat looks after all matters relating to constitutional and legal issues, universities, financial assistance, general petitions and memoranda, appointments and engagements of Governor. It looks after important institutions like Victoria Memorial Hall, Indian Museum, Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre, Asiatic Society, Moulana Abul Kalam Azad Institute of Asian Studies of which Governor is the Chairman/President as well as other N.G.O.s of which Governor is the Chief Patron. The Household Secretariat looks after all ceremonial and protocol matters of Raj Bhavan and Governor’s visit inside and outside the State. It also handles accommodation of VVIPs like President, Vice-President, Prime Minister of India and other State Guests and Guests of the Governor. It makes arrangement for hosting Banquets on the occasion of head of the foreign countries calling on the Governor. It also hosts other important programmes like State Reception on 15th August and 26th January, arrangements of swearing of new Governor, Chief Justice of High Court and Cabinet of Ministers. The Household Secretariat is primarily responsible for furnishing of Raj Bhavan with their proper maintenance. It looks after the purchase and maintenance of the fleet of cars of Raj Bhavan. In short, Household Secretariat cares for the nitty-gritty of the total family of Raj Bhavan.
There are 2(two) Aide-de-Camps one from the Army and other from the Police. All works related to Governor’s tour and personal security are the responsibility of the AsDC. Besides there is a Superintendent of Governor’s Estates who is head of a Public Works Department wing operating in Raj Bhavan which looks after the Civil and Electrical maintenance of Raj Bhavan. There is a Resident Physician to the Governor who is responsible for providing health facilities both for the Governor and the Raj Bhavan staff. There is a Dispensary with a Medical Officer in the Raj Bhavan to provide health care services to the employees. There is a Joint Director, Information who works as Press Secretary to the Governor. He is responsible for maintenance liaison with the media. There is a library in Raj Bhavan headed by a Librarian. It has a book digitization and restoration unit attached to it.
