Raj
Bhavan, Kolkata welcomes the visit to its website by Indian Express-kolkata
Newsline as featured in its front page today. It also takes this opportunity to
say that Raj Bhavan, Kolkata is privileged to put into operation the Right to
Information Act. The observation of Shri
Jayanth Jacob regarding the scale of Raj Bhavan staff and the nature of its
work are taken by us as a constructive follow-up under the Right to Information
Act. It may however be pointed out that
this scale is broadly common to all Raj Bhavans, its appropriateness or
otherwise being a matter of assessment by competent authorities.
With
reference to the nomenclatures used in Raj Bhavan, it may be pointed out that
the Governor, Shri Gopalkrishna Gandhi, soon after assuming office discontinued
the practice of using the phrases 'His Excellency' and 'First Lady'. He regards your point about 'Khidmatgar' as
well-taken and has asked for its use to be discontinued. He believes that Raj Bhavan is tuned to the
times not by symbolic gestures like re-namings but by its sensitivity to the
pulse of the people. As to the
maintenance of the edifice, its fixtures and appurtenances, that is a duty
towards the conservation of our architectural heritage.
